Animal Sanctuary

Shut the Door Farm Rescue is a story grown from a “lifetime” of love, friendship, heartache and the strength to overcome it all. 

My best friend since childhood, Becca, was my rock, my soulmate, an extension of my own self. One of us was brilliant and cultured, the other was a tomboy and collected frogs. One day, while playing a game upstairs at her house, she said what I thought was “Shut the Door” so I stood up and did as I was told. She burst out laughing and said, “No, I said ‘Je t’adore!’- it's French for I love you!” From that point on she always told me "Je t’adore” and I always responded “Shut the Door, too”. 

We shared everything, especially our hopes and dreams, but our biggest dream was saving all of the animals on the planet. We promised that when we grew up we were going to have a big farm where we could provide a home for all of those creatures who needed one.  We always knew we’d be there for each other FOREVER, cheering each other on through all of life's successes and failures. 

But we don’t always have a say in just how long forever is. Becca was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 37.  After a courageous year long battle, Becca lost her life to AML.  We promised to meet on the other side of the mountain and I know we will.

Sometimes, even though a “lifetime” is unexpectedly short, love, friendship, heartache and strength can last forever. When I am alone at the farm, I can feel her standing next to me or hear her laughing- she had the best laugh.
